 259 In the first form, the \fBread\fR command reads all of the data from
 260 \fIchannelId\fR up to the end of the file.

 262 of the file is discarded if it is a newline.

 264 In the second form, the extra argument specifies how many characters to
 265 read.  Exactly that many characters will be read and returned, unless
 266 there are fewer than \fInumChars\fR left in the file;  in this case
 267 all the remaining characters are returned.  If the channel is
 268 configured to use a multi-byte encoding, then the number of characters
 269 read may not be the same as the number of bytes read.

 271 If \fIchannelId\fR is in nonblocking mode, the command may not read as
 272 many characters as requested: once all available input has been read,
 273 the command will return the data that is available rather than
 274 blocking for more input.  If the channel is configured to use a
 275 multi-byte encoding, then there may actually be some bytes remaining
 276 in the internal buffers that do not form a complete character.  These
 277 bytes will not be returned until a complete character is available or
 278 end-of-file is reached.
