  19 ftpusers \- list of users that may not log in via the FTP daemon
  20 .SH DESCRIPTION
  21 The text file
  22 .B ftpusers
  23 contains a list of users that may not log in using the
  24 File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server daemon.
  25 This file is used not merely for
  26 system administration purposes but for improving security within a TCP/IP
  27 networked environment.
  28 It will typically contain a list of the users that
  29 either have no business using ftp or have too many privileges to be allowed
  30 to log in through the FTP server daemon.
  31 Such users usually include root, daemon, bin, uucp, and news.
  32 If your FTP server daemon doesn't use
  33 .B ftpusers
  34 then it is suggested that you read its documentation to find out how to
  35 block access for certain users.
  36 Washington University FTP server Daemon
  37 (wuftpd) and Professional FTP Daemon (proftpd) are known to make use of
  38 .BR ftpusers .
  39 .SS Format
  40 The format of
  41 .B ftpusers
  42 is very simple.
  43 There is one account name (or username) per line.
  44 Lines starting with a # are ignored.
