  30 \fBchpasswd\fR - update password file in batch
  31 .SH SYNOPSIS
  32 \fBchpasswd\fR [\fB-e\fR]
  33 .SH DESCRIPTION
  34 \fBchpasswd\fR reads a file of user name and password pairs
  35 from standard input and uses this information
  36 to update a group of existing users. Without the -e switch, the
  37 passwords are expected to be cleartext. With the -e switch, the
  38 passwords are expected to be in encrypted form.
  39 Each line is of the format

  41           \fIuser_name\fR:\fIpassword\fR
  42 .sp 1
  43 The named user must exist.
  44 The supplied password will be encrypted as necessary, and the password age
  45 updated, if present.

  47 This command is intended to be used in a large system environment where
  48 many accounts are created at a single time.

  50 .\" The \fBmkpasswd\fR command must be executed afterwards to update the
  51 .\" DBM password files.
  52 The input file must be protected if it contains unencrypted passwords.
